Essay Assignment: US History 11

Copied from the PowerPoint:
Essay: Describe the impact of technological innovations on the culture of the United States in the 1920s.

Paragraph 1: Introduction—tell me what innovation you’re going to discuss and why you think it’s important. Possible topics: air transportation, the automobile, consumer goods, radio networks, mass advertising, consumer credit

Paragraph 2: Discuss the innovation—how did it change society then and what is its legacy for our society?

Type if possible! You’re welcome to email it. Due: next class

Choose any innovation you would like...Google "Innovations 1920s," "Inventions 1920s," "Technology 1920s" and see what pops up!

US History 10--1/24-1/28 (B Week)

We're a little ahead of the game in the B day class, thanks to *not* having the career assessment lab today and getting called out for the PLAN results Thursday. Here's what to expect next week:
Monday: Finish chapter 8 section 2/start (and hopefully finish) section 3; work on guided reading!
Tuesday: Section 4; review for Wednesday's chapter 8 test (open note)
Wednesday (B day): Chapter 8 test
Thursday: Section 4; review for test next Monday. Finish your guided reading!
Friday: Chapter 9-1

US History 10 Honors--update (week of 1/24-1/28)

Slight change of plans for next week. On Monday I will do a quick run-through of the War of 1812 (AKA The Second War for Independence) and the upsurge of nationalism. Read chapter 12 this weekend because I plan to come in with a list of discussion questions. We'll plan on doing the chapter test on Thursday. I need to pick up the pace a bit so we can get through everything by the end of the year. If we have extra time each period I will also do some grad exam review.  I'm also going to try come up with a "fake grad exam" for everyone to take to see how you do. Expect that some time in early February.

World History 9 Honors--1/21

We had a bunch of people absent today!  Here's what you need to know:  the chapter 9 test will be on TUESDAY.  You may use your "trading cards" to help you with the matching, and you may also use your sections 3/4 study guide.  The test is 50 questions (44 matching/M.C., 4 short answer, and 2 essay).  Here are the essay questions:
1. Taking into consideration the theories of the thinkers and reformers that we discussed in class, imagine a scenario that would have allowed Britain to industrialize in a more humane fashion than happened. Describe it briefly. In other words, if YOU were in charge, how would you have made it better?

2. Do you think that industrialization has improved the quality of life for most people today? Explain.

To those of you who actually paid attention during the review, THANK YOU. I really appreciate it. You make the class a better place.

The Donner Party: Watch the movie here!

I won't have time to show this in US History 10 (thanks a lot, freak snowstorm!), but if you're interested in a pretty wild story of survival, exploration, and cannibalism, you can watch "The Donner Party" here.

World History 9 Honors

As promised, here's the homework assignment:

You’re living in England during the Industrial Revolution. You want to let the upper classes know what life is like for the average person. Your choices:
Draw a cartoon, write a short poem, or write a 1-2 paragraph “letter to the editor” describing and/or expressing your opinion of one of the topics discussed today.
Due: next class

And now, some tips for making a good grade in the class:
Read your book.
Take notes.
If you've misplaced your book, you absolutely need to take good notes!!!
Listen in class.  If you pay attention, you'll do better and so will the people around you.
Do ALL assignments. I don't assign busywork...my assignments are designed to reinforce what you're learning in class. Besides, zeros for missing assignments are deadly for your GPA.  Remember, you're now in high school and your GPA is now cumulative. Everything you get from day 1 of 9th grade through your last day of 12th grade contributes to your average. That's what colleges are looking at.
Follow the blog and/or join the Facebook group (if you have Facebook). You don't have to add me as a friend to join the Facebook group, unless you want to. I have used Facebook chat with students to answer their questions about upcoming tests.  I use both resources to provide updates on the class and to share links, pictures, videos, and so on.  If you find something relevant that you want to share, you're welcome to post it as well.
See you Tuesday (?)
